Not the first place that necessarily comes to mind when people think about heading on holiday in Europe, this 22-years-young former Soviet republic in Eastern Europe is nevertheless somewhere to keep an eye on.  Sandwiched in between Romania and Ukraine, Moldova is becoming increasingly popular with travellers looking beyond both traditional destinations like France and fashionable new locations like Croatia and Estonia.  With a rich culture, amazing landscape and plentiful attractions for those seeking adventure, a holiday in Moldova could make you the envy of even the most seasoned travellers.

The first stop on most journeys through Moldova will be the capital, Chisinau, which is the hub for most international travel into the country, especially by train or air.  While the tourist industry here may be relatively small compared to other eastern European capitals, there is still plenty of high quality accommodation, including some genuine 4- and 5-star hotels.  There are also many attractions to tempt those looking to learn more about the city and the country, the Victory Memorial, National Cathedral and National Ethnographic Museum to name just a few.

The capital is not the only city worth visiting in Moldova, however.  Tiraspol, capital of the breakaway region of Transnistria in the east of the country, is the second largest in the country and full of historical remnants of the days of the Soviet Union, from tank memorials to the Palace of the Soviets.  Ensure you research entry and exit protocols carefully if you plan to visit Transnistria, however, due to the peaceful yet complex debate over the region’s political status.  B?l?i, around 90 miles to the northwest of Chisinau, with its charming old town, is another worthwhile option.

Wherever you visit in Moldova, make sure you sample some of the nation’s truly excellent wines.  While it is rare to find these great vintages in Western Europe in all but specialist wine stores, they are generally exceptionally cheap for their quality and well worth trying if you are fond of a tipple.

One thing in particular which could draw more tourists to Moldova in coming years is its increasing appeal to adventurous types. There are locations across the country whose natural qualities make them perfect for all sorts of very active tourism, including caving (such as at the Cave of Surprises, near the town of Criuleni) and kayaking (the best spots are on the River Nistru.  Mountain biking and hiking are also popular pursuits in many areas of the country due to its abundant natural landscapes.
