Buenos Aires has been a city in transformation in recent decades and this has resulted in a fascinating location which combines new and old alongside distinctive European and Latin American influences. This also produces a unique atmosphere, a lively, buzzing atmosphere keeping in line with the Tango-esque associations many of us make with this part of the world. The passion of the porteños (local residents) is also plain to see, they are a proud, attractive people who are ultimately responsible for the exciting atmosphere.
Buenos Aires is a city of contrasts, and this theme continues with the choices of accommodation available in terms of both neighbourhoods (Barrios) and specific accommodation types, there is everything from 5-star hotels and apartments in Buenos Aires to quaint budget hostels. The city is divided into these Barrios, all of which are well connected by public transport, and each one has something different to offer visitors:
Recoleta – A taste of the modern, more European, side of the city where you will find many of the finest hotels alongside fashionable boutiques, restaurants and bars. A beautiful area where streets are lined with trees, parks break up the buildings and the upper echelons of society like to hang out. You are also close to downtown Buenos Aires and many of the most popular tourist attractions, such as Cemetario de la Recoleta.
San Telmo – For a taste of old Buenos Aires San Telmo is the place to be; colonial houses on narrow cobbled streets, traditional cafes and antique stores a plenty. San Telmo is also the best place to sample the Tango with many themed bars and even open-air performances most weekends.
La Boca – The old port is a vibrant and strikingly colourful neighbourhood with strong links to the history of the city; after all this is where the first immigrants arrived all those years ago. Whilst maybe not top of my list of places to stay it is certainly worth a visit.
Palermo – Is the trendiest of the Buenos Aires Barrios and in my opinion the ideal place to stay. For those looking for a unique experience I would certainly suggest Buenos Aires apartment rentals and Palermo has a vast array to choose from. These boutique style apartments match the chic restaurants, fashion stalls and long-established, not to mention yummy, ice-cream parlours of the area. It is also slightly removed from the chaos of downtown and the leafier surroundings and relaxed atmosphere make it a wholly pleasant place to be.
Puerto Madero – For the “modernistas” of you this is the place to be, the city’s 21st century wing if you like. Modern, high-rise offices and real estate dominate here as well as some of the finest bars and restaurants which are nestled on a gleaming promenade overlooking the river. Expect all modern amenities here but also a slight increase in price.
Wherever you choose to stay in Buenos Aires I am certain you will be swept up by the porteños way of life, their extravagance and passion will ensure you have a wonderful time and be sure to explore as much of this contrasting city as possible.
