Whether choosing a weekend getaway or an extended holiday, those frantic moments leading up to departure can be responsible for any number of mishaps, forgotten tasks and lost items. The most organised travellers have some sort of personal system to help get them on their way without drama. A certain packing order, important items left in front of the door, lists of tasks and things to take with—no one travelling style fits all. Though it is a good bet that even the most savvy will leave something behind or something important undone. Once departed a general nagging feeling of unease will worry the brain until the forgotten thing is brought to light. Was it the iron? Your mobile phone? Is the backdoor locked? Until the concern is addressed and alleviated no holiday will feel like one.
So before setting out be sure to use an old tried-and-true method of preparation but also consider the following tips.
Make more than one list
A list for packing, a list for travelling, and a list of tasks that need to be accomplished before leaving. They can all be kept together if that’s a preference but deciding on whether to take a jacket will not require as much in the way of problem-solving skills as what to do about the dogs. Jot down anything that comes to mind but then organise the lists so that packing directions aren’t interspersed throughout the house chores list. Check online for a programme or a smartphone app specifically designed to organise a holiday.
To Pack
Do ample research to know what the weather and customs of a region will be. Remember most cathedrals require women to have covered arms and legs so always pack according to any excursion or site on the itinerary. Remember too that weather is highly changeable so consider the advisability of layering clothing. If travelling for an extended time be sure to take needed prescriptions. Eyeglasses and extra contact lenses are also recommended for those who wear them. Sun cream, shampoos, etc. can all be bought locally but at a possibly elevated price for tourists. Remember to take proper identification and remember that all those tech gadgets thrown into the case will need to be charged. Is a voltage converter necessary for any items?
To Do
This list will often cause more concern than a forgotten sweater. There are safety factors for the home, for one. If enlisting the help of a house sitter have they been apprised of everything, from which way the faucet works to which meds to give pup? If not travelling to a remote location then questions can be asked whilst gone but that kind of thing really does take away from the feeling of a holiday. The point is to really get away from the daily grind, right? So as overkill as it may seem write all instructions down and in great detail. Also provide any emergency numbers that may be needed; pet owners remember to leave the vet’s number. Even the most mundane chores like, “Take out the trash” and “Pick up suit” can seem silly to write down. However when the clock starts ticking on departure those little things are what will be forgotten.
Travel List
This may seem strange but it is very easy to forget all the wonderful things one wants to see and do. When dreaming up the holiday be sure to write down some of the must-sees and take them with. Leaving a destination and then remembering something wished for and missed is sad and easily avoidable. It doesn’t mean all items can be crossed off but a list can help prioritise favourites, particularly when the homecoming is imminent. If shopping for family and friends this could be a could place to organise those reminders, as well.
Travelling can be a great way to let the spirit soar and to feel free. Paradoxically it’s thanks to the planning of a holiday that one can enjoy the varied experiences without worry or fear.
