Musicals, theatre productions and London go hand in hand as the capital’s West End has become renowned for capturing the imaginations of thousands, if not millions of visitors. The West End is one of the most famous hubs for all things theatrical and has in its long history hosted some of the world’s greatest musicals and dramas.
Below you will find a selection of our favourite London West End shows.
Cats
Arguably one of the greatest musicals is Cats, but in 2002 Andrew Lloyd Webber decided it was time to close the curtains on the London production. Although it is no longer at the West End it certainly deserves a mention, especially as the masterminds behind Cats are passionate about others staging their own production of the show. So keep an eye open for a production in your area.
Statistics show just how wonderful this piece of theatrical art is, being the longest running musical in the history of British and American theatre. However, it is the reviews that truly illustrate why it is considered one of Webber’s finest pieces. With the power behind each lyric and the emotion that spectators go through and the story that evokes passion, sorrow and joy, Cats has become an unforgettable production.
The Lion King
The Disney story of a young lion cub coming to terms with his responsibilities and finding true love with a childhood friend has come to London’s West End in the form of song and dance. Memorable songs such as ‘I just can’t wait to be king’; ‘Circle of life’ and ‘Hakuna Matata’ along with many other favourites are featured in this production, which is held at the historic Lyceum Theatre. The Lion King has enjoyed great success and is now in its thirteenth year.
Extraordinary chorography, heart warming songs and spectacular costumes make this production one of the greatest musicals that has been featured at the Lyceum theatre at London’s West End. It is no wonder it has won six Tony Awards and been awarded the Evening Standard’s Award for Theatrical Event.
Blood Brothers
A story of turmoil, brotherhood and superstition, Blood Brothers tells a heart warming tale of two brothers separated at birth, living different lives with their guardians and reunited through friendship. With unforgettable scores that have captured millions of imaginations across the globe and inspired many other playwrights, whilst telling a story that evokes a rollercoaster of emotion, Blood Brothers connects with the audience on a number of levels.
Winning seven Tony Awards and celebrated as one of the best musicals to have come to the Phoenix Theatre at London’s West End, Blood Brothers the musical is an unmissable show.
If you are thinking of attending a West End show in London we highly recommend that you go to see either Blood Brothers or The Lion King. However, do keep a watchful eye on any Cats production in your local area, you won’t be disappointed.
