For almost 3,000 years, Ancient Egypt stood as a technological, cultural and social mega-power across the world. Having woven such a rich tapestry, Ancient Egypt is now known around the world for its architectural, religious and inventive innovations, alongside a range of other creations and practices. Despite what you read in the history books, however, there are a lot of untold truths that aren’t so readily available. With that in mind, we’ve collated some of Ancient Egypt’s best kept secrets into this useful guide.
Ancient Egyptians Were the Original Board Gamers
You might think of Ancient Egyptian Pharaohs as strong, powerful, all-knowing leaders, but truth be told, many of them just liked to have a bit of fun. With that in mind, one of their favourite pastimes was playing board games. Although Monopoly hadn’t been invented by then, the Ancient Egyptians had a surprisingly broad selection of games, including such classics as “Dogs and Jackals” and the famous “Senet”. Playing Senet dates back to 3,500 B.C., and it was played by such Ancient Egyptian luminaries as Queen Nefertari and the pharaoh Tutankhamen, who was even buried with his board.
Pharaohs Were Generally Overweight.
The history books might lead us to believe that the pharaohs were slim, slender, beautiful figures – almost model-like in their appearance, and superman-like in health, but actually, the majority of them were overweight, according to archaeological records, and some of them may even have suffered from diabetes as a result. By looking at mummies, archaeologists have learnt that even the legendary Queen Hatshepsut, who was born and ruled through the 15th Century B.C., was actually obese and balding. Despite this, her sarcophagus depicted her as slim and beautiful.
Cleopatra – the Quintessential Ancient Egyptian Figure – Wasn’t Egyptian
Cleopatra VII is probably the famous (infamous?) figure of Ancient Egyptian rule. As such, she is often viewed as the quintessential Ancient Egyptian. Unfortunately, you might have to put these ideas on hold, because in fact, Cleopatra was not from Egypt. Sure, she was born in Alexandria, but where you’re born doesn’t change your genetic past. Cleopatra actually belongs to a long line of Greek Macedonian rulers, originally descended from Ptolemy I, who was one of Alexander the Great’s closest allies and best lieutenants.
