As the New Year has finally arrived, resolutions concerning holidays, vacations and general travelling are on the lips and minds of many families worldwide; eager globetrotters are counting down the days until their 2012 vacation finally arrives. Excited as they may be, it’s not surprising that many families do not take proper precautions whilst planning and preparing for their holiday, and often regret not giving a little extra thought beforehand. Whether you plan to take a hard earned family holiday or you plan to flaunt your new golf club sets, taking a little extra time to consider ways to ensure your holiday runs smoothly is always a good idea; so with that in mind let’s discuss a few things to check for when preparing for your holiday and passing through the airport.
Check In
Tackling the airport should be a fairly simple and short lived procedure, but you would be surprised how many people forfeit their holiday plans by not meeting airport guidelines. The first thing you should check is that you have everyone’s (your family not the whole airport) tickets and passports, without both of these for each member of your family; you won’t be travelling much further than the check in desk.
- Be sure your passport is in date and the photo within meets the airport’s requirements.
- Double check you have packed all tickets and travel insurance documentation.
- Be sure you have had any appropriate vaccinations before travelling.
- Be sure your luggage does not exceed the airlines weight allowance if you do not wish to pay extra.
- If possible, wear clothing that is suitable for your arrival. Wear a jacket to the airport which can be easily removed upon arrival if appropriate.
Hand Luggage
Airport security rules are at an all-time high, and ensuring your baggage and hand luggage meet the airport’s security requirements is the best way of reaching your departure gate hassle free. Be sure to know the ‘Do’s and Don’ts’ of airport security packing your bags, this could save you a lot of time in the long run.
- Laptops and other electrical items are allowed on board but them must be removed and screened separately before being allowed on the aircraft.
- Essential medical equipment must be screened separately and must have the appropriate documents authorised by a doctor or other medical professional.
- Wheelchairs and walking supports are allowed on board but must be screened before boarding.
- Any instruments you wish to take on board must be screened separately and must be of appropriate hand luggage size. If they are too big you should consider purchasing an extra seat in advance.
If you plan on travelling with liquids in your luggage, then try and pack them in your hold luggage as there are strict rules about the amount of liquids that you can take in your hand luggage. The rules outline the types of liquids allowed on board, the amount of liquid allowed and how it is contained. Objects containing liquid such as lighters must be screened and kept in a clear plastic bag so be sure to only carry one and follow the airport guidelines when prompted. Be sure to the check the airports travel safety guide to find out all details about luggage and check in procedures.
