Northumberland is Britain’s least populated county. This means it’s a haven for people wanting to get away from it all by booking a peaceful holiday amidst its stunning scenery and abundance of wildlife. But there’s another side to Northumberland which is well worth exploring – that of home to some of England’s most well known legends and myths. And, as well as centuries old folklore telling of wizards and kings, Northumberland is also home to Alnwick castle which served as the backdrop to England’s newest legendary wizard – Harry Potter.
The Legends of Northumbria
Northumbria, as it once was, encompassed much of northern England and parts of Scotland. It has a rich heritage which extends far beyond the borders of the more modern country of Northumberland, and which can be explored through historical artefacts and the legends which still abound throughout the country.

One such tale is that of the Duergar – the ghostly dwarfish figures who used ghostly lights to lure unwary travellers into the bogs. Another story tells of the mystical Simonside Hills, home to Will o’ the Wisp himself, who would lead passers-by into trouble in the heath.
Perhaps the most famous of all Northumbrian legends is, however, that of King Arthur who was said to have done battle at High Rochester in Northumberland. Arthur was also said to have obtained victory over the Saxons at Binchester and may possibly have fallen at Camboglanna near the western section of Hadrian’s Wall. Much has been made of the possibility that Arthur was a Northern chieftain and as such Northumberland is often evoked in literature and iconic depictions of the legendary king.

For those of you who prefer your wizardry to be a little more modern, Alnwick Castle is a popular destination due to its having been used in the Harry Potter films. It’s a great day out for families with children, who will surely recognise the great doors and towers, particularly if they enjoyed watching the scene of Harry’s first quidditch lesson!
