For those who have experienced India, they can tell you that it is an intense experience. It seems that everything in this great country comes in a heavy dose for both the good and not-so-good experiences. The over flowing population, maddening traffic, and poor sanitation in heavily populated cities and urban areas is a very new experience for most foreigners. Indeed, some foreigners never get used to it. The people can also be a bit of a frustration, considering that they are aggressive when “queuing” and sometimes their curious stares can become annoying.
However, Indians are very friendly and generous people, once you get to understand them. They are very friendly and sociable. Their kindness is somewhat legendary, with some travellers acknowledging that they were astounded by how open these people are. You can meet a total stranger who will happily welcome you to their home, invite you for a social even or show you kindness in one way or another. Of course there are the crooks, but there are many more with hearts of gold too.
Apart from the social life, India is a diverse and beautiful country with a very rich cultural heritage. Travelling here, to the heart of one of man’s first civilizations, takes you on a journey through time.
The religious history of India, though stained with bloodshed, has left some of the world’s most beautiful religious sites. Throughout the country, you will meet shrines and temples dedicated to one of the four religions that was birthed here. The most popular religious sites are Hindu and Buddhist. Nevertheless, you will also come across Jain, Sikh, Muslim and even Christian religious sites in the country. The temples are beautifully constructed and full of artistic elements such as murals and statues. Even shrines have their own unique artistic appeal, depending on the religion and culture of the local area.
The architectural appeal of the country is not restricted to temples and religious places. The world’s most famous temple of love, the Taj Mahal, is essentially a mausoleum. However, it is palatial in size and magnificence, drawing millions of visitors every year to take in its splendor. There are other palaces and forts across the country displaying the splendor of monarchs come and gone.
One of the beauties of India is that there is something for everyone to do. If you are looking for a country that can offer you constantly changing geographical zone, just to keep it interesting, India does not disappoint. If you land in the hot, humid city of Mumbai, you can run away to a quieter beach location and sample some luxury in a nice hotel in Goa. If the heat there is too much for you, head north to the Himalayas and cool down. If too cold, you can head to the east toward the desert region near Pakistan. Alternatively, you can head to the more scenic Kashmir, Shillong even the holy Rishikesh city for true natural goodness. Whatever tickles your fancy, you will find it here.
A few things though you must remember. In order to make your trip memorable, ensure that you are with someone who knows the country well. They can advise you on many different attractions, some exclusively local. I prefer immersing myself in the local culture, so don’t be afraid to venture a little beyond your comfort zone. However, remember to stay safe! Forget the western style restaurants and facilities, and experience the life of an ordinary Indian at least once, even if not fully. Engage the locals as often as you can. Learn to appreciate and respect the local culture, even the maddening habits and I assure you, your trip will be nothing short of an experience.
