How to Pack for Different Climates/Destinations

Packing can be difficult under the best of circumstances but when you’re traveling to different climates and destinations, it can seem more complex. However, it doesn’t have to be.  The key is to build your travel wardrobe around 1-2 colors and make sure everything can pull double duty; think in terms of layers and multipurpose.  You can change your look with different accessories.

Plan Ahead

Know what your itinerary will be in each location.  If you’re not sure of the dress code for a certain area or event, call someone—the concierge at your hotel for example.  If you know before you leave, you won’t pack “extra” clothes.

If you’re traveling to Denver for business and then to Hawaii for vacation you will need both work clothes and beach clothes.  What clothes can transition? Do you have a dress that will work with cardigan and pearls at your work functions and then to a luau with sandals?

Don’t throw everything you think you’ll need and then some in your suitcase the night before.  Instead, lay everything out on your bed and look at it with a critical eye.  Can it mix and match?  If your 5-day business trip requires suits, take two and switch out the shirts.  Women can wear shells under suits and with shorts in Hawaii.

Shawls are invaluable traveling companions.  They can keep you warm on a chilly night and can completely change your look so even if you’re wearing the same dress 3 times in a week, it looks different.

Consider buying 3-4 interchangeable and wrinkle resistant pieces from one of the travel wear companies for your trip.  They could become your “go to” pieces for your entire wardrobe!

If in Doubt, Leave it Out

It’s tempting, but don’t pack 4 or 5 pairs of shoes. If you’re going to Hawaii, pack one pair of nice sandals (for dressing up) and one pair of flip flops for the beach. Stick to one pair of shoes for the business portion of your trip.  Wear one of these to the airport so you’ve only packed one pair.

Make sure your shoes are comfortable. Expect to walk in them.  Leave the blister producing shoes at home.

To pack like a professional, you need to ensure all of your clothes have more than one purpose.

If you have visions of “just in case”  activities and you pack clothes you aren’t sure you’ll need, you’ll end up hauling a lot of extra weight and leave no room for souvenirs.

The Suitcase

How you pack your suitcase can be as important as what you put in it.  Place the shoes you won’t be wearing to the airport in the bottom along with clothes you won’t need right away.  Tuck your socks and underwear in the corners.

Tissue paper can help prevent wrinkles in dress clothes if you use it between the folds.

With a little forethought, you can pack less for two different destinations and feel like a polished, professional traveler.
