If you are planning a weekend getaway this summer, consider going to Maryland. The state has several attractions and lots of family friendly activities.
See Aquatic Life and Interesting Science Exhibits at the Inner Harbor
The Inner Harbor attracts thousands of visitors each year. It is located in Baltimore and features several attractions including the National Aquarium, Maryland Science Center, and Harborplace. The National Aquarium is home to over 16,000 animals including fish, birds, frogs, turtles, and dolphins. See exotic marine life up-close and take part in the immersion tours. Some of the most popular include Jellies Invasion, Atlantic Coral Reef, Australia: Wild Extremes, Dolphin Mornings, and the Sharks! Behind-the-Scenes Tour.
The Inner Harbor also has several shops, restaurants, and places to sit and relax. It is known locally as Harborplace. You can buy clothing at Urban Outfitters, browse the oddities at Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Odditorium, and eat at Uno Chicago Grill or Edo Sushi.
The Inner Harbor is a short drive from the JBA Kia of Ellicott City Maryland. They offer great rates on new and pre-owned cars.
Golf, Swim, and Soak Up the Sun at Ocean City
Another place to have fun in Maryland is Ocean City. It is a beach town located on the Atlantic coast that offers several activities. You can play a round of golf at Ocean City Golf Getaway or play miniature golf at any one of the Old Pro Golf put-put courses. There’s an amusement park, water park, and several water sport rentals available. You can go parasailing, jet skiing, or fish in the back bays.
Visit Historical Houses in Frederick
Maryland was one of the original 13 colonies, and its history is still visible today. There are several historical houses that are open to tourists. One of the most interesting is The Rose Hill Manor Park and Museums. The Manor House was the retirement home for Thomas Jefferson. Visitors can experience the daily life of late 18th century America here. The Carriage Museum, Farm Museum, and Children’s Museum preserve the heritage of this area for future generations. Some of the activities that are held include:
• Yarn making and weaving from raw materials
• Colonial cooking over a hearth
• Gardening
• Tours of log cabins, ice houses, and the black smith shop
Guided tours are available for both the Schifferstadt and Roger Brooke Taney House during the weekend. Contact each one for directions, tour hours, and fees.
Go Rock Climbing or Dance the Night Away in Rockville
If you are bored on a Friday night, gather a few of your friends and make your way down to the Town Square in Rockville. With dozens of shops, restaurants, cafes, and various types of services available there, it is a great place to shop, eat, relax, and work. The open-air Rooftop is a great place to hold a party or take a dance class, while the VisArts Center is ideal for displaying your artwork or taking an art class. The Town Square also features a large ice rink, a beautifully designed fountain, and a state-of-the-art library.
Charter a Boat or Attend a Concert in Rock Hall
One more town to visit this summer in Maryland is Rock Hall. It’s located on the northeastern shore of Chesapeake Bay. The coastal town attracts many visitors because of its relaxed atmosphere. You can charter a boat at Blue Crab Chesapeake Charters and head out into the dark waters of the bay. Stay out on the water until sunset to experience a stunning view of the setting sun.
