Hiking Diamond Head in Hawaii

Diamond Head was formed by volcanic eruptions and is estimated to be about 150,000 years old. Considered a must do for those who visit Oahu, Diamond Head is located between Kahala and Waikiki, and rises to 762 ft offering those who make the hike up to the top brilliant views of the surrounding Pacific Ocean, Honolulu and Hawaii Kai.

Getting to the Top

You have a variety of options for climbing to the summit of Diamond Head with most people choosing to drive up. Locating the road entrance is simple enough, with the road that takes you up being well signed. Between Makapuu Avenue and 18th Avenue there is another road that goes up to the top, and you can also take a bus up from Waikiki with routes 1,3, 22 and 23 all servicing the crater.

The bus stop for Diamond Head is right in front of the entrance so be sure to inform your bus driver you are heading there. Additionally, be alert when you start to go up the hill or you could miss your stop and have to walk back.

If you have your own car you can also drive there yourself, however walking is not unusual. Pedestrians can walk along the dirt path on the side of the oncoming traffic, and you have an opportunity to stop at a scenic point before you head down the tunnel which offers views of the Kahala district.

Whether you are walking or driving be cautious when you head through the tunnel to the main entrance, as there is only a little room for pedestrians. Drivers should drive slowly with headlights on to avoid any accidents.

Starting the Trial to Diamond Head Summit

Once you have paid your entrance fee at the main entrance which is usually $1 for pedestrians and $5 for each car, you can collect a trail map along with a ticket stub as a souvenir. There is also a Visitor’s Booth which will give you information about the trial and the history of Diamond Head and its usage during World War I. Be sure to check out the best deals to get to Hawaii at cheapflights.com.au.

Once you have soaked up the history of the crater then you can start walking the trial to the summit. It starts off as a paved cement path which slowly transforms into a dirt path and then rocks. Metal guard rails are installed for safety as you walk and before you arrive at the top there are two other scenic viewpoints for you to enjoy.

At the Summit

Once you get towards the end of the trial and the top of Diamond Head, you will head through the artillery observation platform where you will need to watch your step and duck slightly to avoid hitting your head. Once at the top you will be treated to some exceptional views, and if you have travelled to the top alone then ask people around to take pictures of you as it is an experience like no other.
