The English capital has lots to offer its visitors but sometimes there will be a place that is a landmark as well as an experience. The Tower of London is a fabulous attraction to visit that has a very gruesome history and a stunning building. It is worth the visit as it offers a really important insight into English history. This attraction is perfect for families and especially entertaining for children. It is also famously where the royal crown jewels are held that can be viewed by members of the public. These are part of the Royal Collection and are still used by the current monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, containing expensive and pretty gems.
It is very interesting to learn about the tower’s defence system against enemies of war and to have a wander around its fortress. The tower walls were actually breached by peasants in a famous revolt in 1381. Tourists can have some time on the Wall Walk that lets them discover the defences that protect the tower. There is a reconstructed fighting platform here and visitors can see what it was like to be part of the medieval garrison that had to fight for the tower. This fortress actually still has a very strong military presence, as there are many soldiers that are given the responsibility to guard the Queen’s House and Jewel House.
A visit to the White Tower, which is the oldest part of the building, is definitely worth it for its four floors. It also has one of the most famous castle keeps in the world and is a wonderful example of Norman architecture. It has a gorgeous 11th century Romanesque chapel inside called St John the Evangelist. The White Tower also famously has the Royal Armouries collection that includes the 300-year-old exhibition Line of Kings. There are many fantastic pieces of armour on display that belong to Henry VIII. The wardens offer their expertise on tours through the White Tower where travellers can learn about its executions and ghosts.
The Beefeaters or yeoman warders are famous around the world for their uniform and have been guarding the tower for around 500 years. The present-day yeoman warders have served in the armed forces for at least 22 years and are very happy to answer any questions about the tower. Tourists can get a tour from one of these incredibly knowledgeable staff members and learn about the history of this building including its prisoners and execution victims. The tours begin every 30 minutes at the main entrance and last around an hour.
