If you’re looking for an all-round destination that has something for everyone, then you may want to consider the stunning island of Crete. Whether you’re planning to holiday on the cheap or whether you want to holiday in style, Crete has it all.
Here are some great ideas to suit everyone.
Taking in the Sights of the Samaria Gorge
If you really want to see the real Crete then why not walk the 11 mile journey through the longest gorge in Europe. You do have to be reasonably fit, but the end result is well worth it. With a stunning backdrop of pine trees, mountain streams and spectacular scenery it really will take your breath away. Just imagine starting high up in the glorious White Mountains and ending your trek at the Libyan Sea. You really will get a sense of achievement, not to mention a bucket load of memories that will stay with you for many years to come.
Pay a visit to the Aquaworld Aquarium and Animal Rescue Centre
Situated in Hersonnissos the Aquaworld Aquarium is a real delight. All of the animals here have been rescued and are lovingly cared for by the staff. Characters such as the giant python, an octopus named Dmitri who can open a jar to get his lunch and a blind but extremely content giant sea turtle are well worth the visit alone, but there are also plenty more animals and marine life for you to see. As a result, Aquaworld makes for a great day out, both for kids and adults alike. You can find more great family activities online at http://www.airholidays.co.uk/.
Dine at Hania Harbour
If you like your holidays to be a little more refined then why not visit the city of Hania? The harbour here is beautiful and is the perfect setting for a meal or a drink, especially when the sun is just setting. The city also has some excellent shops so it is great for some retail therapy.
Chilling out at the Beach
An article about the delights of Crete wouldn’t be complete without mentioning the beaches. Crete has over 1000kms of coastline and as such is blessed with some of the best beaches in Europe. Why not take a trip to Elafonisi Beach with its stunning pink sands caused by the millions of tiny broken sea shells, and crystal clear waters. Alternatively the aptly named Bali Beach is well worth a visit. The beach has a selection of tavernas and water sports facilities where you can be as active as you wish. Finally Falassarna Beach is great for the kids because along with its sublime kilometre of white sands you’ll find warm shallow waters to swim in. It’s repeatedly voted the best beach on the island.
