The first thing that often comes to mind when you hear “Brazil” is undoubtedly beaches, and more specifically, the beaches of Rio, Paraty, and even Buzios. Florianopolis is rarely the Brit or American’s first choice for their Brazil holidays, but it is most certainly worth learning about Florianopolis and everything this island city has to offer.
With over 42 beaches, Florianopolis has long enjoyed its status as a popular holiday destination in Brazil itself. Beach and pool parties, a stunning natural setting including rainforest and mountains, and high-end restaurants and bars attract tourists year-round. It is renowned for its laid back attitude and unrivalled night life, and in 2009 it was declared “Party Destination of the Year” by the New York Times – a carefully considered title not to be taken lightly by those going on holiday in Brazil!
For those who are less interested in beaches and poolside parties than enjoying some history and culture on their Brazil holidays, there is still much to explore. Wandering through the historical centre with its cobbled streets, you’ll come across the Catedral Metropolitana which originates from a chapel built in 1675 and is still a major attraction capable of drawing crowds of tourists. At the centre of the city is Praça XV de Noviembro, the city’s old town square, which is surrounded by beautiful historical buildings, many of which have undergone refurbishments and restoration. At the center of the square there stands a fig tree which has been there for over a century. It is rumoured that circling the tree seven times will bring luck. For architecture and history buffs, the must-see attraction is probably the baroque-style Palacio Cruz e Souza; originally built in 1770 as the headquarters for the governor, it is now home to the Museu Historica de Santa Catarina.
On the more adventurous and aquatic side of Brazil holidays, Florianopolis offers numerous outdoor activities, and rather unsurprisingly, most of these revolve around water. There is a lot more to do at the beach than simply sunbathe, swim or surf, although those who surf will already be aware that Florianopolis is one of the surf capitals of the world. For more laid back, or at least slightly less difficult activities, the options are extensive and varied. It’s possible to rent a boat for a day out on the sea, and fishing excursions are also available. If being in the water itself is a more attractive prospect on your Brazil holiday, there is deep sea scuba diving and even swimming with dolphins! At Lagoa de Conceicao jet skiing and windsurfing are popular and relatively inexpensive activities, and if you’d prefer to stay dry but still get a thrill there are numerous hikes, and sand boarding down the dunes at Joaquina Beach is a must.
Florianopolis really does have it all – not only everything one looks for in a Brazil holiday, but everything one could want in a holiday destination anywhere. From beach parties that last until sunrise to centuries-old cathedrals, there is something to satisfy every type of traveller on holiday in Brazil.
