Choosing a beach honeymoon: 3 ideal locations

Deciding where to go on honeymoon was one of the most difficult decisions my husband and I had to make, as we definitely wanted to find somewhere that would spoil us for all the hard work we’d put into our wedding. Luckily, there are lots of idyllic locations in the world – here are just three that we think are the most beautiful destinations for beach honeymoons.

1) Mauritius

This is where we ended up going, so it’s hardly a surprise that I’m going to think it belongs in this selection. Mauritius is situated 2,000 km off the east coast of Africa in the heart of the Indian Ocean, but despite this significant distance, you’ll notice characteristics from the continent in its food, architecture and decor, giving the island a particular charm.

The reason we chose to honeymoon in Mauritius is that it offered both tranquil golden beaches and lots of activities to take part in. So, we could spend a few days reading our books soaking up the sunshine and taking in the breathtaking view of powder blue seas, and the rest of our time going snorkelling, diving or windsurfing.

I’d also recommend stretching your legs and going for a walk in the Black River Gorges National Park, where there are more than 300 species of plants. This is the only reserve in Mauritius and covers 3.5 per cent of the entire island, demonstrating just how big this one park is. If you’re a nature enthusiast, you’ll also appreciate a trip here, as you can spot a number of native birds in the reserve. You can keep your eyes peeled for the pink pigeons, the Mauritius kestrel and the echo parakeet.

2) Fiji

Another contender for our honeymoon was Fiji, with this country boasting everything we were looking for in a romantic getaway – plenty of sun, sea and sand, as well as lots of activities and a heap of personality.

The Fijian islands – of which there are 333 – are situated in the South Pacific Ocean, many miles from any mainland. As a result of this, you can guarantee palm-fringed beaches, turquoise seas and bright blue skies pretty much whenever you go. For neighboring countries like Australia, this place is perfect for honeymooners coming from the land down under to go to. Fiji is just a few hours away which will not only save them money but be far enough away from home to enjoy their time away. Aussies have another advantage when they choose to buy roundtrip tickets to Fiji; since they are so close the prices are relatively cheap.

If we’d gone to Fiji, I’d have really want to see locals perform mekes, a traditional song and dance, during a kava session. Here, you can see them dress in grass skirts, interesting jewellery and accessories and with tribal paint on their faces. It would be quite an experience to see locals dance around in time with one another – and this would be a memory of our trip here that’d stay with me forever.

3) Antigua

For many people – us included – a dream honeymoon involves a holiday in the Caribbean. As most people will know, there are several islands you can choose to visit here, from St Lucia to Jamaica, all of which have their own specific character.

If you’re looking for somewhere beautiful, chilled out and boasting the title of the sunniest location in the East Caribbean, come to Antigua. The island is home to 365 beaches, year-round sunshine and has only 45 inches of rainfall every year, which means you never have to worry about the weather during your honeymoon.

With so many bays to choose from during your luxurious honeymoon on the island of Antigua, you can find a stretch of sand that is ideal for you, whether it be one that is perfect for surfing or an isolated cove sheltered by a coral reef. There are plenty of things you can do on the island, from snorkelling and sailing to golfing and enjoying spa treatments, so you won’t run the risk of becoming bored during your honeymoon – although, after all that wedding preparation, you’ll be more than relieved to have some downtime on your romantic holiday!
