The all-inclusive holiday is typically seen a cheap and cheerful family break with the kids at a resort in southern Spain, but the truth is there are actually a really wide range of all-inclusive options to suit all tastes.
The reason all-inclusive deals are so popular with families is that there are great way to manage costs. No-one wants to budget while on their holiday, but if you’re paying as you go for all your food and drinking costs, plus excursions, expenditure can quite quickly get out of hand. Knowing that you’re paying a flat rate ahead of time allows those with a tight budget to get the most for their money.
All-inclusive trips are as popular as ever with the economy the way it is and inflation reducing spending power. UK travel agent First Choice, for example, became the first big tour operator to sell only all-inclusive deals for 2012.
Some all-inclusive trips, however, can be a little bland. Many travellers want more than plain three-star hotels with simple buffets in the hotel restaurant, and a busy hotel pool or private beach. But there are many great all-inclusive packages which include five-star locations in stunning beach resorts, as well as cruise options which offer a huge array of possibilities. What’s more, there is no need to feel tied to the resort – the savings available from an all-inclusive deal can mean that occasional trips out to the local bars and restaurants are easily affordable.
All-inclusive packages area really worth consideration, but selecting the right package involves taking some time to research what is available is important, as is avoiding some of the common pitfalls.
Many all-inclusive resorts – especially those at the cheaper end of the scale – tend to take block bookings from one country, so avoid these if you want to avoid by surrounded by the same people you get at home. Avoid isolated locations – it may claim to have everything you need on-site, but the option to go off on your own is always a bonus – and hotels which also offer a flavour of local life – rather than simply a home from home – will also be much more interesting.
Check carefully what is included in the package deal – if there are limited number of food options you may find yourself getting bored of the cuisine pretty quickly, while some of the advertised activities – such as watersports or excursions – may not be included in the list price.
