Dublin is one of the most under-rated cities in Europe, but Is one that definitely shouldn’t be overlooked. This city is full of great activities, friendly locals and fantastic nightlife too – so if you’re after a fun-filled weekend away in a lively city, Dublin might be just what you’re after.
One of favourite things about Dublin though, is that you can walk around the city easily, which is rare in European countries – as quite often public-transport (or a taxi!) is required. Dublin is quite the opposite though, the city centre is compact and easily accessible, and the main attractions are all within 5/10 minutes of the city centre too – so perfect for those who love city breaks but don’t love blisters and achy feet!
Here’s my guide to walking around the beautiful city of Dublin:
- Start your walk on O’Connell Bridge
O’Connell Bridge is a great place to start your walk, especially if you’re setting out in the morning. Enjoy the fresh air over the water and the gorgeous views along the river. This is one of my favourite spots for enjoying a morning coffee, and to give you the energy for the day ahead!
- Walk along O’Connell Street
Walking along this main street you’ll see all kinds of gorgeous Irish buildings, both classic and modernised. You’ll also see the beautiful post office building – which is quite a landmark in the city and a piece of history.
- Temple Bar
You’ll soon come across Temple Bar, where you’ll find some of the best night life the city has to offer. It’s probably still morning time – but take note of this area for the evening time, because it’s definitely where you’ll want to head later to sample some of that famous Irish hospitality – and the Guinness of course!
- Trinity College
Trinity College is one of the most beautiful universities in Europe, so don’t miss the chance to take a look around this gorgeous campus and grounds. The campus looks stunning in both the summer and winter – so don’t worry about the seasons or weather either! When walking around the campus, it’s free to do – but just remember to be respectful of the students and lectures currently taking place.
- Stroll through Grafton Street
Grafton Street is one of the poshest and upper-end shopping districts in the city, here you can mingle with the cities elite and enjoy a spot of designer shopping. Visit during the sale season for a few bargains – although thing may still come with a price tag! There are usually some extremely talented buskers on Grafton Street too, so don’t forget to throw them a coin or two if you enjoy their performance!
- Finish at Merrion Street
Merrion Street is the centre of old Georgian Dublin, so take a while to wonder around these streets and take in the lovely buildings and culture. There are also some beautiful museums in this part of the city, including the Natural History Museum which is always a great hit with families. It even free to enter – making it a fantastic place to walk around.
