5 Foods You Miss When Travelling and How to Take Them with You

At the heart of the British psyche is the appreciation of the comforts of home. While travelling is about getting away, there are some things which we just can’t leave behind. So if you’re going on holiday, here is a list of foods you might miss along with some information about how to take them with you.

Chocolate

There is something distinct and unique about the taste of British chocolate. The milk chocolaty goodness of Cadbury’s Dairy Milk is easy to miss when travelling abroad. Even the bars produced under the Cadbury label in the US don’t seem to taste quite the same as their counterparts manufactured back in old Blighty. So, if you crave the taste of British chocolate, it’s best to think about taking some with you. As long as you put them in a sealed container so they don’t melt, they are relatively easy to take in your luggage, but it’s not something that’s going to last for long!

Baked Beans

There’s no two ways about it. If you want beans, you need Heinz Beans. For that reason, the recipe for Heinz Beans has never changed. Even though it’s sealed in a can, the liquid tomato sauce means you need to pack it in your hold luggage. This is a weighty item though so unless you’re a serious bean lover you should probably think again.

Tea

The intake of tea is as natural to the British as the intake of air. And, for many, a daily ritual. But not all countries take tea drinking as seriously as us. Travellers ordering a morning cup of “English Breakfast Tea”, in the desperate hope that it will taste like Yorkshire or PG Tips, are likely to be disappointed. It won’t. It’s just not the same. But fear not – tea bags are very easy to pack. You can keep them in a zip lock bag. Just remember to label each bag so you don’t get your builder’s tea muddled with your Earl Grey.

Oxo Cubes

If you miss the smell of roast dinner on a Sunday, Oxo cubes are small, handy, last forever and recreate the lifeblood of a British meal: gloopy, glorious gravy. Since they are non-hydrated and compact, they last for ages and are the easiest thing to carry on this list.

Marmite

Marmite is another gloopy, glorious substance that’s hard to find when you’re away. If you’re a Marmite lover who will miss the punch on their toast in the mornings, it’s quite easy to pack in your hold luggage. But since it is glass, it’s best to wrap it in a jumper to avoid breakages. But be warned: Marmite is likely to raise many eyebrows when put under the noses of the uninitiated so, if you do carry it with you, be careful who you share it with!

Travelling is a wonderful thing, but some people find themselves missing what they’ve left behind more than others. If you’re in the midst of a multi stop flight holiday, sometimes a little taste of home can be a great pick-me-up and all is needed to remind you of what will still be there when you return.
